Where do our wrinkles come from?
As we get older, our skin becomes thinner and looser … and we gradually develop wrinkles. Of course, it’s not the same story for everyone. As time goes by, our skin cells are replaced more and more slowly. The collagen and elastin fibres begin to deteriorate and the moisture content of the skin decreases. Skin tissue sags and loses it firmness.
It’s around the age of 20 that this ageing process begins. The secret is to moisturise your skin to keep it supple. The first wrinkles begin to appear around the age of 30. Yes, as early as that … These are expression lines. At the age of 40, skin dryness begins to develop and the reduced elasticity of the dermis leads to the formation of wrinkles that no longer have anything to do with “expression”.
During the next decade, the process speeds up. And beyond the age of 50, wrinkles become deeper and more numerous. The skin continues to thin and loses even more of its firmness.
But don’t despair! All is not lost – far from it. The two main factors in skin ageing are ultraviolet light and smoking. And some cosmetics can be of help. The secret is to act as early as possible and to focus on prevention.
