White marks on the nails are nothing to worry about!

Contrary to what you might think, the white marks we sometimes find on our nails are not a sign of calcium deficiency. In fact, our nails are composed of keratin. And unlike our bones, which contain a great deal of calcium, our nails contain only around 0.03%! The white marks we’re talking about are due to the movement of cells in nail matrix, which is where the cells that make up the nail plate are formed. These cells, which are composed of hard keratin, “move forward” as the nail grows. It only takes some minor irregularity or a flaw in the rate of growth for a white mark to appear. (...)
